A Closer Look at the Timing Belt and Serpentine Belt

Although some of the components in your car are powered by an electrical charging system, some accessories run using the motor as a source of power. Pulleys and belts deliver that power to those engine components.

The most common belts are the serpentine belt and the timing belt. The serpentine belt delivers power from the engine to drive the alternator, water pump, air conditioning compressor, radiator cooling fan, and the power steering pump. The timing belt is integral to how well your engine performs. This belt keeps your car's crankshaft and camshaft running together. When these two shafts do not run in unison, the engine will not run properly. A bad timing belt can also damage the engine's pistons and valves

If you have logged thousands of miles on your car and have not had your timing belt checked, it is probably time to schedule an appointment with Valley Volkswagen and let a mechanic inspect, and if needed, replace the belt.
